Here we go. Just like clockwork, Texas’s Senator Ted Cruz has finally said what we knew he was thinking and declared that the SCOTUS decision to legalise gay marriage was ‘clearly wrong’.

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, effectively banning abortion in almost half of the USA, Judge Clarence Thomas said at the time that they were looking at a number of precedents that they believe should be overturned including gay marriage, set by Obergefell v Hodges. SCOTUS ruled at the time that the right to marry is guaranteed by the Due Process Clause and the Equal Process Clause of the 14th Amendment.  

Step forward none other than everyone’s least favourite Senator who fantasises about sex between Mickey Mouse and his dog Pluto, Ted Cruz! On a recent podcast, he declared:  “Obergefell, like Roe v Wade, ignored two centuries of our nation’s history. Marriage was always an issue that was left to the states. We saw states before Obergefell – some states were moving to allow gay marriage, other states were moving to allow civil partnerships.”

Cruz went on to say: “There were different standards the states were adopting'” and argued if the Supreme Court had not ruled in favour then “the democratic process would have continued to operate”. He said in  Obergefell, “the Court said ‘No we know better than you’, and now every state must sanction and permit gay marriage. That decision was clearly wrong when it was decided.”

Throwing gay marriage and LGBTQ+ people under the bus is de rigueur for Cruz who’s own approval ratings are in the toilet and who’s reputation in his own state after a number of gaffes, lies and sycophantic episodes is pretty much rock bottom, even amongst Republicans.

So its pretty much standard behaviour for Cruz to attack vulnerable minorities when he wants a headline but abortion and gay marriage are not small issues and if the current trajectory of the dissolution of human rights in the USA continues, the midterms and indeed life as we know it are going to be extremely rocky in the very near future.
