Thirteen years ago when RuPaul first started Drag Race, who could have predicted that after more than a decade, the show would be getting recognition from all the mainstream awards?
After various Emmys and Golden Globes, RuPaul can now add MTV Movie & TV Awards to her glittering shelf of gongs. The World of Wonder show won Best Reality Cast, Best Competition Series and Best Host (of course) at last night’s awards.
RPDR had the most nominations out of all the unscripted shows (the awards were divided into scripted and unscripted) beating out the likes of Bling Empire and Nailed It. Michelle Visage was on hand with Ru to accept the award saying ‘Now that all this is lifting and performances are open, bars are open and your drag brunches are open, please go and support your local queens.’
It comes at huge time for the Drag Race brand with seemingly countless new iterations either already showing, about to start (Drag Race España) or in development. Sam Dowler, co-presenter of Drag Race podcast United Queendom said: ‘Each version of the show brings something new. The ostensibly endless supply of talented queens are all unique, sometimes even to what region in a country they are from. Is there a danger of the format being overdone? Ask me again when we’re reviewing Drag Race Scunthorpe.’
RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under is currently showing around the world (check local listings) and you can listen to United Queendom, the UK’s premier Drag Race review show HERE.

Although there were certainly a few wins (Ru Paul broke records by becoming the most-awarded Black artist in Emmys history, Hacks' Carl Clemons-Hopkins slayed the red carpet with...
Last night was the 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and Ru Paul made history. Crowns aren't unfamiliar territory for the Queen of Drag, but last night was pretty special for Ru Paul. Drag Race picked up the Outstanding Competition Series award for the fourth year in a row and Ru made Emmys history, again, by becoming the most-awarded Black artist by picking up the 11th of...
