Watch: The trailer for Joel Kim Booster’s queer rom-com ‘Fire Island’ has landed

Hulu has dropped the trailer for Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang’s new Pride and Prejudice-inspired queer rom-com ‘Fire Island’.

Directed by Andrew Ahn, Fire Island tells the story of a pair of best friends who set out to have a legendary week-long summer vacation with the help of cheap rosé and an group of eclectic friends.

The movie, which is inspired by the famous Jane Austen novel and set in New York’s Fire Island Pines, is a modern day queer rom-com starring its screenwriter Joel Kim Booster, along with Bowen Yang, Zane Phillips, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Tomas Matos, Torian Miller, and Margaret Cho.

“We made something really, really special and unique and gay,” Joel Kim Booster told Vanity Fair back in March, “The fact that we did that feels miraculous, considering what we were up against.”

Going on to say, “Jane Austen’s observations about the way people are awful to each other without being awful to each other—I was like, Oh, my God. This is shade. This is what gay men do all the time.”

Although the script is fundamentally rooted in comedy, Joel told Vanity Fair that it also addresses the intersections of race, class, and dating as a friend group vacations together.

“What happens when gay men are put together on an island and there are no straight people to oppress us? How do we oppress each other,” he said.

“I want people – especially gay men, especially queer people – to walk away from the movie happy that they’re gay,” he said. “I want people to come away from this movie feeling joy of our experiences and that it’s not all tragic. There are many of us out here living our lives joyfully.”

Elsewhere, Bowen Yang is also set to star in upcoming queer comedy “BROS”, co-written by Billy Eichner and director Nicholas Stoller, which hits screens this September.
