“The film is a love story – but not the love story you might think”
Venom: Let There Be Carnage drops very soon and we are hyped.
Much like many movies over the last 18 months, Venom’s sequel (originally penned for release Oct 2020) has been delayed multiple times due to COVID restrictions, but on October 1 (US) 2021 it will finally hit cinemas. The UK release will follow shortly after on October 15.
The much-hyped follow up sees the return of Tom Hardy playing Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote alter-ego. Michelle Williams, who stars as Eddie Brock’s ex-wife Anne Weying, will also return and Naomie Harris joins the cast playing the movie villain – a character called Shriek. Woody Harrelson (Cletus Kasady/Carnage), and Reid Scott (Dr. Dan Lewis) also return for the second instalment.
The relationship between Eddie and his alter-ego, Venom, is noted as being reminiscent of a ‘love affair’ of sorts and, speaking to UPROXX, director Andy Serkis detailed a scene about midway through the movie where, following an argument between the two, Venom (Tom Hardy) attends a rave without his host Eddie Brock (also played by Tom Hardy), where he described it as a “coming out” moment for Venom.
Serkis revealed that Hardy and the film’s co-writer, Kelly Marcel, thought up the storyline: “Tom and Kelly were always talking about Venom coming out and going to a party that was a sort of LGBTQIA kind of festival, really, I’d call it,” Serkis said. “So this is his coming out party basically. This is Venom’s coming out party.”
Serkis also discussed the much-discussed parallels between Venom’s story that of the queer experience: “He says in the movie, ‘We must stop this cruel treatment of aliens.’ He said, ‘You know, we all live on this ball of rock,’ you know? And so he inadvertently becomes kind of…he’s speaking for the other. He’s speaking for freedom of the other.”
Serkis goes on to explain that Eddie his alter ego’s love for each other is a core part of the narrative: “Absolutely they do love each other and that’s the kind of the centre of the movie is that love affair, that central love affair”.
