Oh dear. At a time when jobbing actors are just recovering from over a year of slim to no work, Lionsgate have decided to cast Mel Gibson in a John Wick spin off TV ‘event’.
It’s well documented that Gibson has been homophobic in the past as well as misogynistic and anti-semitic. In an interview in 2020, Winona Ryder said: “We were at a crowded party with one of my good friends. And Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and we’re all talking and he said to my friend, who’s gay, ‘Oh wait, am I gonna get AIDS?’ And then something came up about Jews, and he said, ‘You’re not an oven dodger, are you?’
Due to show on Starz over three nights, the special is called The Continental and will serve as a sot of prequel to the John Wick series of movies. Titular hotels will be managed by Winston Scott who was played by Ian McShane in the films.
It seems like a very strange decision and the Twitterverse reacted accordingly. See below for a couple of examples.
