“You don’t get out, until you scream”
After much hype, the trailer for Netflix’s Britney vs Spears has finally dropped, and it has left fans gagged.
Back in February, NYT released Framing Britney Spears – a documentary which charted press handling of Britney in her early career and also, importantly, her current conservatorship. Although Brit has slammed many unauthorised docs about her in the past, Framing was undeniably hugely instrumental in accelerating the #FreeBritney movement.
At the time Britney said “I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in … I cried for two weeks and well …. I still cry sometimes“
Netflix’s angle will focus largely on her conservatorship, where currently her attorney, Mathew Rosengart, has taken the next steps to have the arrangement dissolved, citing that it ‘no longer serves a legitimate purpose’ and reiterating that his biggest priority is the removal of the Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, as conservator of her estate.
Mr Spears has agreed to step-down from his role as conservator, saying that he ‘does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests’
Netflix’s trailer begins with a clip of Britney saying, “I just want my life back”, with one guest commenter adding shortly after: “Britney had a fear her family would barge in and take everything.”
Commenting the Netflix’s Instagram post promoting the trailer, Sam Asghari, Britney’s fiancée, wrote: ‘I hope the profit from these docs go towards fighting [against] injustice #freebritney.’
The documentary synopsis reads: ‘The world knows Britney Spears: performer, artist, icon. But in the last few years, her name has been publicly tied to another, more mysterious term: conservatorship.
‘Britney vs Spears tells the explosive story of Britney’s life and her public and private search for freedom. ‘Featuring years-long investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents, this Netflix feature film paints a thorough portrait of the pop star’s trajectory from girl next door to a woman trapped by fame and family and her own legal status.
‘It shows Britney’s life without utilising the traumatic images that have previously defined her.’
Britney vs Spears will be available to stream on Netflix from September 28.
