Drag Race icon Aja opens up about gender journey and asks fans for support

“I am ready to affirm myself and be in the body that I feel most comfortable in”

Aja, who competed on the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, took to Instagram to share a heartfelt post with her 850,000 followers, asking for help on her ‘gender journey’.

She also updated her pronouns on the app to she/her.

“Well yall, here we go”, the post reads. “Im on my Gender journey and auntie needs some help. Please share! Im trying to be as comfortable in the skin I’m in as I can. 🧡 Link also in Bio 🧡”

Aja has historically always been incredibly open sharing her journey with fans; in 2018 saying that, rather than identifying as a drag queen, she simply saw the performance as “an extension of [her] gender identity”.

Back in September, Aja posted saying: “I have battled a very intense gender dysphoria since 2018”, continuing “I came out as non-binary and things started to make more sense to me from a gender standpoint however things became more difficult for me from an artistic standpoint because I started to feel like every time I dressed up I was embodying my trans identity and not an art form.”

“I felt like I was beginning to understand who I was at the core and it was no longer a performance but my reality. I was watching the season of RuPaul‘s drag race all stars 6. I have been a big fan of @xosonique for a very long time and I don’t know. Watching her win made me realize that, that could be me”

Aja continued: “Trans is who I am and drag is what I do”, before concluding: “To those who read this please be kind. This was not an easy decision to make and I hope I do not regret it.”

On GoFundMe the page, the star writes:

“Hi There!!!

My name is Aja! You may know me for my appearance on Rupaul’s Drag Race S9 & AS3, being a Recording artist and/or my social media platform. I am raising money to pay for the medical portion of my gender journey. While researching, I’ve come to realize how expensive a lot of these procedures actually are. I am asking for the help of my community, friends and family. I have lived my life as Non Binary since 2018 and have recently began to identify more with the feminine aspect of my identity. Now living my life as a trans woman has brought out worries about different things such as my appearance. I am ready to affirm myself and be in the body that I feel most comfortable in. I am interested in/but not limited to Facial Fillers/Botox/Facial Feminization, Laser Hair Removal and eventually maybe electrolysis, Hair Plugs, etc. I would really appreciate all your help! Thank you so much ☺️”
