Hello, Sidney.
First of all let’s say one thing from the offset… we are SO excited about the release of Scream 5!! So this news story will be riddled with bias because I am a MEGA fan of the Scream franchise.
Just important to be transparent.
Admittedly, its three proceeding instalments haven’t quite matched the excellence of the original, but they’ve still been killer (excuse the pun) movies and we’ve got a GREAT feeling about number five.
What makes number 5 even more exciting is the addition of a queer character.
Screenwriter Kevin Williamson – the storyteller behind the Scream movies – has in fact said that the whole franchise was inspired by “gay survival.”
Speaking to The Independent, Williamson said: “As a gay kid, I related to the final girl and to her struggle because it’s what one has to do to survive as a young gay kid, too. You’re watching this girl survive the night and survive the trauma she’s enduring. Subconsciously, I think the Scream movies are coded in gay survival.”
Now, in a new behind the scenes clip, Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays character Mindy Meeks-Martin, can be seen saying: “Moded! If I can’t have her no one can.”
