Trans actress Jamie Clayton will star as Pinhead in new Hellraiser remake

Jamie Clayton has been cast as Pinhead in an upcoming remake of Hellraiser and we are LIVING.

Jamie, who won or hearts playing Nomi in Netflix’s Sense8 and appeared as Tess on Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q, will star in the remake of the 1987 original, becoming the first woman and the first trans person to take on the iconic role.

Clayton will star alongside Odessa A’zion, Brandon Flynn, Goran Visnjic, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aoife Hinds and Hiam Abbass in the new movie, which has already wrapped filming and is set to stream on Hulu in the US.

No word yet on whether the adaptation will be released in the UK or anywhere beyond yet, but presumably that decision will have a lot to do with its success stateside.

Director David Bruckner said in a statement: ‘Combined with a fearless and committed cast, including the amazing Jamie Clayton, who fully embodies the role as the Hell Priest, we’re aiming to create a very special new chapter in the Hellraiser legacy’.

Clayton took to social media to confirm her part in the remake, tweeting: “Demons to some. Angels to others” which is a quote from the original 1987 movie.

Fans were also thrilled to learn that Clive Barker, who wrote and directed the original Hellraiser, will be involved as a producer on the project.

The OG Hellraiser movie, although not directly LGBT+ in its narrative, has become somewhat of a cult queer classic over the years, with themes of S&M and kinky sex throughout.

Barker, who is gay, said in an 2017 article for Guardian that he based Pinhead’s look on S&M clubs. “I was emotionally inspired by them, too,” he commented. “On S&M’s sliding scale, I’m probably a 6.”

The remake will be released sometime in 2022.
