“The best way to respond”: That ’90s Show wins high praise online for cute coming out scene

Adorably handled.

That ’90s show landed on Netflix in 2023 and there’s one scene in particular that has won LGBTQ+ viewers’ hearts already.

The 10-part sitcom is a reboot of the cult series That ’70s Show, which sees Donna and Eric’s teenage daughter Leia (Callie Haverda) visit her grandparents in Point Place for the summer, where she meets new friends and falls in love.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis reprise their roles as Michael Kelso and Jackie Burkhart, aka the parents of Jay, Leia’s love interest, for episode one of the series. But that’s not the only bit that has folk online talking.

Teenager Ozzie, played by Reyn Doi, shares “his 16-step coming out plan” to new friend Leia and, after completing step 6 (telling strangers in his small town that he’s gay), Ozzie tells Leia that his next step is coming out to an adult that he sees all the time.

His adult of choice being fan-favourite and Leia’s grandmother, Kitty, played by Friends alum Debra Jo Rupp.

The emotional coming out scene not only left Kitty in tears, but had That ’90s Show viewers tweeting all the emotions along with her.

That ’90s Show is available to stream on Netflix now. Watch the trailer below.
