Anyone who says ‘whats the point in Pride?’ ever again, we will point them towards 2021. Violence against LGBTQ+ people has invaded even the most seemingly tolerant nation and NO-ONE is immune.
Lil Nas X has spoken about how even he fears violence ever since his provocative video for Montero (Call Me By Your Name) arrived on the scene, instantly blowing everyone’s minds and sending the evangelical right running for their crucifixes.
In a new interview in Variety, he was asked if he’s ever felt “unsafe as a gay man in public?”. Obviously this is something on all of our minds at the moment, including Lil Nas X who responded candidly: “Yeah, a lot of the times, absolutely. Especially once the Call Me video came out. There was literally someone who chased my car a few days after that video came out, and they were like, ‘Fuck you!’ or something like that. They started to follow the car. That’s when I started getting security.”
Lil Nas X continued, perhaps somewhat naively: “I’m not sure exactly what [led to the abuse] but I feel like it couldn’t be a coincidence — the timing of that and the video.” The jokes on these philistines however as currently the video has been viewed 325 million times on YouTube and nearly 830 million times on Spotify. In fact, here it is again, enjoy!
