The Homo Sapien Experience EXTRAS: Your New Gay Roommate

Authors: The Homo Sapien Experience

Since the beginning of humanity, gay people and straight people have had to figure out how to live together.

As we all remember Adam & Eve, the first ever gay/straight roommates, worked tirelessly in the Garden of Eden to find their own way to coexist in peace and harmony (I believe it was once Adam fashioned those super cute leaf outfits that the two really started to hit it off as friends).  But what does it take for straight people and gay people to live together?  Should we still do it, or are we moving beyond it?  And at the end of the day, are we really that different?

Well here today at The Homo Sapien Experience, we dive right into that question, face first.

Join Matt, a gay man (shocker, I know) as he moves in with straight newlywed couple, Maura and Patrick.   As we witness the trials and tribulations of gay/straight roomatehood, these housemates also discover a myriad of new things!  For instance, we learn that what one might consider a necessary product for rectal douching, another might see as a convenient “traveling watering can” that can really make that basil thrive.  We discover that “Competitive Sports” are not just the ones that center around balls (ie, football, baseball, basketball), but in fact there are some sports in which tucking those balls away is integral to winning!   And we realize that the definition of what a “Dad” truly is can span all different types of relationships.

And though these roomies may have had a bumpy start to their new living situation, by the end they are happily adjusted and peacefully coexisting.  So, though at times it might seem impossible, we are here to say that gay people and straight people can in fact live together.  All it takes is a little bit of time, understanding, and a basil plant that needs watering.

Behind the Scenes

So the basis of this skit is actually pretty truthful.  For a month, I (Matt) went to go live with two of my favorite people on earth, Maura Nicholson and Patrick Nicholson while working at a resort up in gorgeous Southport, Maine.

As we were getting settled into living together, we would joke about running into the same situations you see in this skit.  It didn’t take long before we knew we had to do this video. We filmed this all in one day with our bestie  Michael Maxim (AKA: “Dad”), and spent the whole time laughing our butts off while getting a wee bit tipsy on margaritas. Also, fun fact, the work zoom scene was recorded in real time.

We had the incredible Corinne Larson, one of our good friends and also one of the owners of the Inn we worked at, play the role of “boss” on the call.  I asked her if she could just ramble off a stream work-meeting jargon while we filmed and that’s what she brilliantly came up with!  Hilarious!  It’s always my favorite to create these videos with some of my best friends. Also, if you’ve never been, go to Maine.  It’s incredible.
