More queer cinema gets a big old hurrah from us!

Especially when it’s a thriller and the theme is essentially mystical lesbian nuns.

Starring Virginie Efira and Charlotte Rampling, the first trailer for Paul Verhoeven’s (Robocop, Showgirls) Benedetta has been released and it looks awesome. The new movie – based on a true story – is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in July and it’s already generating a whole lotta hype.

Here’s your synopsis:

“In the late 15th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice.

“Capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.

“Benedetta takes in a young woman to her convent, and the two begin a passionate affair.”

We know an official release date for France only of July 9, with other countries expected to be announced in due course.
