Yes, it’s a religious twofer! We all read the incredibly disheartening news recently that the Pope decreed that priests couldn’t bless same sex unions (‘What’s that?’ you cry, ‘Catholic Church in error or judgement shocker?!’).
Well, it seems the ruling continues to ricochet around the word with Mean Girls star Daniel Franzese losing a compering gig at a Catholic University (THEY HAVE LITERALLY DEEMED HIM ‘TOO GAY TO FUNCTION’, YOU GUYS) on the one hand and on the other, Catholic Lewis Hamilton has deemed the ruling ‘unacceptable’.
Franzese, who played GBF Damian in the 2004 classic, said he was fired from presenting a forthcoming male beauty pageant after the Pope’s ruling with the uni citing ‘the personal beliefs of the higher administration’.
‘I am a gay man. I’m single’ Daniel Franzese said, ‘The Vatican’s statement about blessing unions should have absolutely not have factored into the decision for them to follow through on a booking that they initiated. Instead these words are being weaponised against me as they will no doubt countless others.’
Meanwhile Hamilton proved what an ally he is, reposting a comment from Elton john along with his own statement which went as follows:
‘It is unacceptable that in this day and age, anyone should face prejudice or discrimination based on the person they love, especially in the name of God who we are told loves us all equally. It is incredibly sad that many will now feel they have to choose between their faith and being their true self, and I want my followers to know that I stand with you and I support you, and you deserve happiness. Love is love, don’t let anyone tell you differently.’
Hamilton couldn’t have hit the nail on head any more accurately. What point is there in religion if it extolls the virtues of loving one another and God loving us equally when they don’t even follow ‘His’ word?
