“I was ashamed I’d never be able to do what I love and be gay”.

Australian football star Josh Cavallo, who plays for Adelaide United, has shared a heartfelt social media post Wednesday (27 October) coming out as gay, making him the world’s only current openly gay male top-flight professional footballer.

“I am proud to publicly announce that I am gay”, he says in the post, adding “I have been fighting my sexuality for over 6 years now, and I’m glad that I can finally put it to rest.”

He add that he’s “astonished” that there are  “currently no gay professional footballers who are out and actively playing” and hopes that “in sharing who I am, I can show others who identify as LGBTQ+ that they are welcome in the football community.”

Josh’s Tweet was accompanied by a separate post from @AdelaideUnited, his team, titled ‘Josh’s Truth’:

“I’m a footballer and I’m gay,” Cavallo said in the emotional video, shared on Adelaide United’s Twitter.

“I know there are other players living in silence,” the 21-year-old midfielder added. “I want to help change this, to show that everyone is welcome in the game of football and deserves the right to be their authentic self.”

“The response and support I have received is immense,” he shared. “It’s starting to make me think that why have I been holding this burden for so long?”

He goes on to say: “You were meant to be yourself, not someone else.”

Congratulations, Josh!
