We love Demi Lovato.
It’s Non-Binary Awareness Week and the singer – who came out as non-binary back in May – took to social media to let fans know that it’s okay if people slip up using their pronouns from time to time, as long as they are trying.
On Instagram they wrote:
“I felt the need to post this because I often find that the change in pronouns can be confusing for some, and difficult to remember for others”.
“It’s all about your intention. It’s important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it’s okay 😊🙏🏼💞 remember that I love you, and to keep going 🤟🏼☮️💗 #nonbinaryawarenessweek”
“If you misgender me – that’s okay. I accidentally misgender myself sometimes!” the singer wrote.
“It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!”
“As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, and as long as I remember my truth, the shift will come naturally.
“I’m just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process.”
We stan a graceful icon.
Earlier this month Lizzo went viral for fantastically shutting down a photographer who was clearly making no effort whatsoever to use Demi’s correct pronouns, repeatedly referring to them as “her”.
From the heartfelt tone of Demi’s post, it would seem that the key message is quite simply: “as long as you try”.
When it comes to misgendering, there’s a HUGE difference between an accidental slip-up when you’re adjusting and repetitively being ignorant and/or showing complete disregard to someone’s pronouns when they’ve made it quite clear.
Demi then went on to repost a poem from one users’ aunt about use of pronouns (below).
Meanwhile, Jojo Siwa revealed this week that one of Demi’s music videos played a part in her “gay awakening”, whilst opening up about her sexuality during an appearance on Lovato’s podcast 4D with Demi Lovato.
