Ever the ally, Lewis Hamilton has spoken out in disgust at the Hungarian government’s anti-LGBT laws ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.
In a recent stand-off with the European Union, the PM Viktor Orban said he was going to hold a referendum with extremely leading questions but it’s nevertheless a vote and Hamilton mentions that too in his Instagram story post.
“To all in this beautiful country Hungary. Ahed of the Grand Prix this weekend, I want to share my support for those affected by the government anti-LGBTQ+ law. It is unacceptable, cowardly and misguiding for those in power [to suggest] such a law. Everyone deserves to have the freedom to be themselves no matter who they love or how they identify. I urge the people of Hungary to vote in the upcoming referendum to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community they need our support more than ever.”
He’s not the only F1 driver going on social media to support the Hungarian LGBT community, Sebastian Vettel took to Twitter showing a picture of his racing shoes with rainbow designs on the track along with the following: “I find it embarrassing for the country. I can’t understand why they (the government) are struggling to see why everybody should be free to do what they like.”
Along with the German football team during the Euros, it’s amazing to see sports stars showing their support and in turn putting pressure on the Hungarian government in the process.
