It’s the moment LGBT+ fans have been waiting for as the new Fantastic Beasts trailer sees Dumbledore finally confess his love for Grindelwald.
In a new TV spot for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, fans finally get to see Dumbledore (Jude Law) confess his love for Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen).
The trailer sees the two characters discussing Grindelwald’s plans to take over the world when he tells Dumbledore that with or without him, he’s going to “burn down their world” and asks him if he intends to turn his back “on [his] own kind.”
“It was you who said we could reshape the world,” the Grindelwald adds. “It’s what we said we’d do.”
At which point Dumbledore utters the words fans have been speculating over for 15 years: “Because I was in love with you,” Dumbledore says.
Although Dumbledore’s sexuality was never explicitly addressed within Harry Potter world, once-loved author and current TERF keyboard warrior JK Rowling did, in 2019, confirm that he was gay and that the two had a relationship.
Subsequently, the Fantastic Beasts franchise came up against criticism for a lack of visibility and for skirting the subject of a gay romance between the two characters, played by Jude Law and formerly Johnny Depp.
Despite the new clip, LGBTQ+ fans on social media were hesitant to award the franchise with too much praise, given both the brevity of the gay storyline within the movie and also JK’s continued attacks in the trans community via her increasingly problematic social media.
Earlier this month, the hashtag #JKDoesntSpeakForMe was trending globally on Twitter after the author claimed that ‘innumerable’ gay people shared her anti-trans position.
