Sometimes adverts for junk food get it so wrong, and sometimes, like here, they get it right.
An advert for Doritos in Mexico for their Day of the Dead celebrations has become a viral hit with its adorable depiction of a family visiting the grave of their uncle who appears to them with his new male partner.
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican and Latin American holiday observed November 1-2 that celebrates the memories of deceased loved ones. Anyone who’s not familiar with it should check out Disney’s Coco which is a stone cold classic.
A representative for Dorito’s commented: “In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a celebration of life. It’s a moment to share our respect, love, and unity for all the people we cherish, even if they are gone, and it’s an opportunity for Doritos Mexico to celebrate love and our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community every day. With the commercial ‘It’s never late to be who you are,’ we want to say that it’s never too late to share your true self, and when you are ready, we will support you.”
The ad hasn’t been well received across the board however, with some complaining (SURPRISE) that it’s not right that the uncle has to be dead before he can come out and have a partner.
Perhaps just accept it as a cute bit of cartoon advertising for your tangy cheese tortilla chips rather than a lesson that you have to remain alone your whole time on earth but at least you’ll get a partner in the afterlife. That, of course, would be ridiculous.
