Sir Richard Branson’s successfully completed his maiden voyage to the boundary of outer space this weekend – and he was packing a Pride Flag.
Virgin Galactic, along with its owner Richard Branson, rocketed into space on Sunday (as you do) and he revealed ahead of take off that he was taking a Pride Flag with him.
Branson explained his reasoning to was to honor victims of the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando. The flight comes a month after the five year anniversary of a horrific shooting where 49 people were killed and 53 wounded in an LGBT+ nightclub.
“Somebody who lost a loved one at the massacre asked if I would do that. We also have many, many friends who are gay and I know people who lost friends there,” he explained.
It’s not known which version of the Flag he took up there, but it’s a pretty cool thing nonetheless. Especially fitting since the ship was named ‘unity’.
Branson called the trip “the dawn of a new space age”.
