It seems that we write every day about the plight of trans youth in America who are literally fighting for their lives. Now, at last, some good news.
We all know how partisan politics is in America at the moment and when you have 73 million Americans voting for a man who lied consistently about LGBTQ rights, signed a law (now repealed by Biden) banning trans soldiers form the military and even his daughter Tiffany Trump gave a speech in favour to ‘LGB’ rights (we’ve made out feelings clear on that before), you know it ain’t high on a lot of folks’ agendas.
So last night in a wide ranging speech on Capitol Hill, President Joe Biden called for the Equality Act to pass rapidly through Congress, saying: ‘I also hope Congress can get to my desk the Equality Act to protect the rights of LGBTQ Americans. To all the transgender Americans watching at home — especially the young people who are so brave — I want you to know that your president has your back’
By writing the Equality Act into law (which would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity nationwide), it would mean any anti-discrimination policy couldn’t just be undone by another president.
At last something positive, and this time from someone who can do something about it. Biden is a politician thinking about the most vulnerable and not just about a baying mob they’d do anything to appease.
