Nate’s story: “The only cosmetics that worked for my skin”
Rapper, MC and singer Nate Ethan Watson talks duetting with his pre-transition self and being an ambassador for skincare brand My Perfect Cosmetics.
Grime music isn’t particularly a scene that’s immediately synonymous with the LGBTQ+ culture.
For artist Nate Ethan Watson, who started his transitioning journey back in July 2018, things seem to have gone a little smoother than expected. He says: “After I came out with my story on the BBC, the focus was on what people on the grime scene might think, but people didn’t really change with me.”

“It was the other side of the music industry where people seemed to have changed their tune slightly”, Watson explains. “I did notice that compared to everything I’d done in the past, certain fees or amounts that I charged before, now they think they can offer me less cos I’ve transitioned or ask me to perform for free. I just know they wouldn’t have asked me that before I’d transitioned!’

One thing Nate noticed a definite change in was his skin. “You don’t really read much about how skincare might change throughout the process of transitioning” he explained.
As someone who had always looked after their skin, Nate was shocked by the difference; “The process is kind of natural because you see yourself – and it’s just a gradual process – but then you start trying products and it’s then that the reality hits – wow my skin has really changed!’
The cosmetics industry is worth billions and each company promises to deliver targeted, gender-based results, with corresponding branded packaging, because obviously MEN like it to feel manly (grr) and WOMEN want it to feel girly (eek). A dated rhetoric which completely misses the purpose of what we all actually want – amazing skin.
Isn’t it time skincare caught up with the rest of society? That’s where My Perfect Cosmetics (MPC) and their #SkincareHasNoGender campaign come in: screw the packaging, give us something that works for everyone.
Like so many of us, Nate had a skin regime, but just like that, it stopped working. ‘They were really good products that I spent a lot of on and became my regular things!’

“My skin is so sensitive, my face reacts to everything,” he says, “Nothing was really working. I was trying medicated creams and it just wasn’t happening”.
He was drawn to MPC by their ‘skincare has no gender’ ethos and after getting involved as just a regular punter, he was amazed at the results: “Once I tried the products, I don’t know how to say it without it sounding unbelievable!” he laughs, “Straight away I spent two hours doing the facial. I even did a before and after pics! I loved the results!”
Discussing what’s next in his recording career, Nate revealed: “After I transitioned I performed at London Pride. There was a song I’d recorded before I’d transitioned and we kept my female voice on there but then I performed with the male voice and it actually kind of worked! Like a duet with myself!”
Nate spent lockdown writing and creating Trans and Non-Binary Connect which is an international initiative to help young people struggling with their gender identity.
